Daily Inspiration ~ May 16th

Thich Nhat Hanh

It is the individual who can effectuate change.  When I change, I can help produce change in you.  Because you have the seed of understanding, compassion, and insight in you. What I say can water that seed, and the understanding and compassion are yours and not mine.  My compassion, my understanding can help your compassion and understanding to manifest.

Thich Nhat Hanh

Deep compassionate listening is essential to the creation of peace, personal, interpersonal, community, national, and international peace. In this practice, you listen with all your mindfulness and concentration in order to give someone who is suffering a chance to speak out.

Even if his speech is full of condemnation, bitterness and blame, you still listen, because you know that to listen like this is to give him a chance to move in the direction of peace.

If you interrupt, deny, or correct everything he says, he will have no chance to make peace.

Deep listening allows the other person to speak, even if what he says contains wrong perceptions, bitterness and injustice.

The intention of listening is to restore communication, because once communication is restored, everything is possible.
